latitude:   43 ° 47.60 ' north  longitude:   15 ° 37.20 ' east  Murter is situated n the northwestern part of the Sibenik archipelago, in north dalmatian archipelago. It consists  of four villages: Murter, Tisno, Betina and Jezera. It is assumed that Murter is named after a mortar - the stone  bed that was part of the oil presses.  The ancient city Colentum was located at the foot of the hill Gradina on the north side of the Hramina bay and  on the opposite side of the hill where is this diving center. It is assumed that it was in the 2nd century plundered   by pirates or destroyed in the earthquake. In the 7th century in the List of islands it is is referred to as the  Celentum.   The original inhabitants of the island were the Illyrians and Romans who were farmers and herders later evolved  to sailors and shipbuilders. They invented ‘Murterska gajeta’, a ship of length from 5 to 7 meters, which in its  original form had a closed deck, without a cabin, a covered hole in the middle for descending into lower deck, a  triangular sail and two to three pairs of paddles.  In the second half of the 19th century Murter inhabitants became owners of the neighbouring islands of Kornati.
